Wildest Dreams (Muskaan Anand) - Taylor Swift (Guitar Cover)
30-Sep-23
Muskaan and Khushi joined sessions a year ago. I remember Muskaan only joined sessions because Khushi wanted to learn the guitar. And these Noisy Kids never do anything without the other. (I'm surprised they even chose separate songs as their first song.) But Muskaan and Khushi both have an amazing intellect and ear for music. The world would be at a loss if they didn't choose music as their career. Both have the potential to write better songs than stupid Billie Eilish.
It took around 2 months to figure out that Muskaan and Khushi have a different pace of learning. I knew I had to go extremely slow with Khushi and I had to go extremely fast with Muskaan. Muskaan would be my 3rd fastest learning student from the 300 students I have taught so far. I was only teaching her the guitar in the first two months when she learned how to sing the song on her own. She had finished learning her chords and metronome control in record time, 3 months. The moment I realized she was learning at a godly speed, I skipped Level 1 for her and gave her something worthy of her caliber.
We switched to Level 2. Level 2 means you have to sing along with playing the guitar. Now this posed as a challenge to my young padawan. Left-hand and right-hand coordination is easy, but the moment I added 2 additional tasks (3. Remembering the lyrics and 4. Controlling the pitch of her vocals) her brain couldn't handle the strain. Not to mention, she had to do all 4 tasks on the metronome. Those were 5 tasks in total. This, coupled with a lack of consistent training and a general adherence to refuting every idea I would give her caused a significant delay in Muskaan's progress.
I wanted to make sure Muskaan was at her limit while learning her song. Only slightly outside your comfort zone do you make real progress. Until these kids learn to do this on their own, it's my job to make sure they get the right amount of tough exercises and songs to ensure they keep excelling.
Muskaan faced a lot of problems with the vocals for her song. Mainly because it was a difficult song, and her natural vocal range did not match the scale of the song. Which is why, if you observe, she is singing squeaky high-pitched in some parts and also singing low and off during the drop. Now that's not completely her fault, the song needs range. What is her fault, is that she didn't train her vocals regularly at all, which would have improved her range and vocal control really well. Muskaan, I hope you will take my advice seriously at least when your idol Manvi tells you that my guidance helped her a lot with her vocals.
While I gave Muskaan free rein whether she wanted to train consistently or not, I wanted her to learn the consequence of not training. I kept telling her, if you don't train, you will get left behind. And that did happen. Muskaan finished her song somewhat in June. But when I asked her if she was ready to record her video, she was unwilling and delayed it. She took 11 months to finish her Level 2 video. She would have completed it in 6 months if she had listened to my advice. Whether she continues to rebel against me for no reason or chooses to heed my advice is up to her. But as her Guitar Wale Uncle and her friend, I will always guide her towards the right path, not always the easiest path, but always one that keeps her best interest in mind. And always respecting her choice.
She completed her video on 21st August and won the D&D bet. And I'm proud of her skills and confidence. She completed her video in the first take. Only 2 students so far have completed their videos in 1 take. To date, I have never finished a single song in 1 take.
